Human
trafficking is a modern-day slavery epidemic that is sweeping our
world; no
country is immune from it. There are more victims of slavery
today than
during the entire period of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
It is estimated that:
- More than
27
million people are currently victims of human trafficking.
- 80% of
human trafficking
victims
are women and girls being sexually exploited—up to 50% are minors (some as young as 4-years-old).
- 20% are exploited
as forced labour.
- An estimated 1.2 million children are
trafficked each year.
- The total market value of illicit human
trafficking is estimated to be in excess of $32 billion (U.N.)
Already
colossal in size, this modern-day slavery—the exploitation of human beings—continues to grow.
The process of
change starts with
awareness...then we must
stand united to stop human trafficking.
